Entourage Premiere Episode

entourage-season-six-premiereGuess what I just managed to miss? The season premiere of ENTOURAGE! Argh. Of course, I will be making sure I get to see it not only because I want too but because it seems that going from everyone else’s reactions this season is going to be great. Here’s what people have to say about the season six premiere episode “Drive”

The wait is finally over and the boys of Entourage came roaring back for the sixth season premiere tonight on HBO. This episode had it all: classic Johnny Drama lines, the guys giving E a hard time, Ari treating Lloyd like his lap dog and some Vinnie sexual escapades. Throw in some great naturalistic dialogue and superb editing and this season looks like one hell of a ride. – Janaki Cedanna of TVFodder

Overall, it was nice to see the boys doing well, and finally branching out of their own inner circle. – Allysa Lee of LA Times

Everything we knew about Entourage finally seems to be evolving. Some of it’s logical and some of it’s forced so that the story progresses, but all of it makes sense. Entourage was due for an overhaul if you think about it, and what could be more perfect than seeing what life is like for the guys when they aren’t constantly worrying about Vince’s career? – Jonathan Toomey of TV Squad

A better than expected “Entourage” premiere tonight has proved inspirational…I guess if a mediocre falling star can get the lead in the film version of one of our most beloved books, directed by one of our most beloved directors, then anything can happen. Welcome back, fantasy world of “Entourage.” You’ve been missed. – Mark Schultz of Detroit TV Examiner

Hillary Duff Comes to Gossip Girl

duff_hillary_2009Confession time. One of my guilty pleasures is watching Gossip Girl. I know it isn’t the most cerebral TV show but it sure does get you once you start watching. If you don’t know what I mean then don’t start watching even a single episode unless you want to get hooked. If you’re already hooked, then you obviously know what I mean.

So what brought about my confession? Hillary Duff.

I have never been a Hillary Duff fan and was even turned off with her mouthing off against Faye Dunaway, even if Faye Dunaway kind of deserved it. From where I come from there’s something called respecting your elders.

Anyway Hillary Duff is going to be on Gossip Girl. According to EW, “The actress-designer-pop chanteuse will play Olivia Burke, a movie star who enrolls at NYU in search of a traditional college experience. She ends up rooming with Vanessa (Jessica Szohr) so it’s safe to say she’ll be majoring in Drama!” As for the confession it seems that Duff is a fan of the show and her favorite character is Chuck Bass. I guess we do have something in common. There’s just something about Chuck Bass that makes me watch Gossip Girl. Maybe it’s as Hillary Duff said, “I don’t know why, because he’s so bad and terrible. He is so sad that I feel bad for him.” So come fall we’ll be seeing Hillary Duff aka Olivia Burke but we’ll have to wait and see if her character will be into Chuck Bass as she is or some other guy.

Battlestar Galactica and Lost Wins Saturn Awards

saturn_awards_trophyThe Saturn Awards were given away last week and we all know that the “Dark Knight” dominated the awards show, at least for the movie awards categories. When it comes to the TV awards “Battlestar Galactica” still rules, managing to get back its title of being the Best Cable TV Series, which it has won 2005 but was snatched away by “Dexter” last year.

Below’s a list of this TV winners of the 35th Annual Saturn Awards. For a full list of winners you can download this Microsoft word document provided by the by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.

Best Television Series: LOST

Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

Best Presentation on Television: THE LIBRARIAN: THE CURSE OF THE JUDAS CHALICE

Best Actor on Television: EDWARD JAMES OLMOS (Battlestar Galactica)

Best Actress on Television: MARY MCDONNELL (Battlestar Galactica)

Best Supporting Actor on Television: ADRIAN PASDAR (Heroes)

Best Supporting Actress on Televison: JENNIFER CARPENTER (Dexter)

Guest Starring Role on Television: JIMMY SMITS (Dexter)

My reaction to the winners? Being a Battlestar Galactica fan I’m glad they got the title back. I also really like Dexter though so it’s good that they at least got awards. As for Lost, I lost my interest in the series a few seasons ago so I couldn’t care less. The twists and turns are also too much to follow and I am not in the mood for a Lost marathon just so I can finally figure out what’s been happening.

Season Enders and Almost Endings

biggest_loser_helenLast week was an exciting couch potato week for me with lots of shows airing its finale or nearing its end. Here’s a quick recap of the three that I managed to watch and I think would be of interest to you as well.

Biggest Loser – This was my week’s highlight. I’m a sucker for this show and this season, just like everyone else, I’m really really pleased with how it turned out. If a 48 year old woman can lose 54.47% of her body weight and a 64-year old grand pop can lose 48% of his, what excuse do we have for not getting fit?

American Idol – Kris Allen proved to have a bigger fan base than I expected. He is now gunning for the top spot even though Adam is still the favourite. We’ll see what happens next week. I’ve already said that I’m Adam’s girl so I really hope Danny Gokey’s fans doesn’t shift their support to Kris.

Grey’s Anatomy – Of course I had to watch the season finale. Weirdly I wasn’t too moved by the finale and am a bit miffed that I’ll need to wait several months to find out whether Katherine Heigl and/or T.R. Knight are gone for good. Lots of other unanswered questions aside from that but I guess these things are what keep us watching the next season.

Lots more coming next week and to be able to cover more I’ll post after each show. Stay tuned for the Survivor recap tomorrow!

“Kumar” Dying to Work at the White House: He Got his Wish!

note_ctActor Kal Penn, best known for his role Kumar in “Harold and Kumar” movies is movie from House to White House. The TV series had to find a way to say goodbye Kal Penn’s character Kutner fast when he decided to accept the offer to work in the White House. The writer and producers of House figured out a pretty memorable way to do it by having Kutner commit suicide.

Kutners suicide was a shock to his House co-workers although Dr House, being who he is, tried hard to not be , or at least show that, he was affected by the whole event. Kutner’s body was found early in the episode with the whole show focusing not on drama, which remains unknown, but on the reality of suicide. Though a very sensitive topic that is very hard to portray House managed to show the real pain suicide brings, both to the one who commits is (at least before he actually dies) and the people left behind, no matter how little or much they seem to care for you while you still lived.

In real life though Kal Penn is very happy and does not plan on inflicting such pain to loved ones and is in fact looking forward to his career shift in government. According to Penn his official position would be associate director in the White House office of public liaison. His decision does not reflect his sentiments for the show because as he says, “I’m having an incredible time, but there’s something aching in me to do something completely different and take a break from the acting thing for a while.” So he hasn’t said good bye to acting for good and with the salary he be getting for his new job hopefully we’ll see him back a few years down the road for a stint or two when he decides he needs to fatten up his bank account again.

10 Best TV Shows Of 2008

Showtime's

Here it is again – another one of those lists which eventually crop up at the end of each year. This time, this is a list of the best TV shows that we had in the past year. This list was compiled by the people at The Connecticut Post and I do have to disagree with some items so I am merely noting down the ones I think should really be part of anyone’s list. Call me biased but here they are.

Lost,” ABC: The wildest, most daring drama on broadcast TV continued to go for broke in its fourth season, bringing us time travel, the relocation of the island and a bunch of other nutty stuff. I don’t always know what’s going on on “Lost,” but the writing is so consistently smart and surprising that I always want more. Bonus: Michael Emerson’s pitch-perfect work as Ben Linus, TV’s best villain.

This only made number 5 on their list. Not a bad choice, don’t you think?

30 Rock,” NBC: Though this was the year of Tina Fey as Sarah Palin on “Saturday Night Live,” her NBC sitcom about the nutty goings on at a sketch comedy show was also worthy of praise. The series struggled a bit after returning from the strike hiatus, but last season’s finale was great, as were several of this season’s episodes. My favorite was “Reunion,” in which we find out that Fey’s character, Liz, was evil in high school. The episode also gave us the line “I want to go to there,” now in competition with “I can see Russia from my house” for the best Fey line of the year.

30 Rock at number 7? Whoa…there’s something wrong here. I thought it should be at a higher place!

Dexter,” Showtime: A lot of people disliked the third season of this drama about lovable serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), and I agree that this season wasn’t as good as the past two. But I’m putting it on the list for Hall’s always excellent work as Dexter, and Jimmy Smits’ fantastic performance as an assistant district attorney with a dark streak.

This was their last choice. Bad choice. Dexter should have been in the top 3 in my book.

What’s your opinion?

Moral Issues Spark Debate Over TV Shows

Showtime's

Lines such as “everyone’s favorite serial killer” would not have been uttered by the average person a few years ago. However, with the popularity that Dexter has reached, this tag line is well known all over the world. This has sparked a certain amount of interest in those who believe that there is a correlation between real life happenings and what is portrayed in TV shows.

Dexter is not a lone ranger in the recent trend of dark heroes on TV. We have Jack Bauer, who has gotten himself into every sort of tangle possible. We also have Dr. Gregory House, a “distinguished” doctor addicted to Vicodin. There are countless TV heroes today who, contrary to the traditional perception of heroes, cannot be labeled as good or bad. In fact, they fall in the various shades of gray that we encounter in our daily lives.

This is what people who have issues with the moral impact of TV are bringing up. These people, in spite of the fact that they are fictional, may have a way of impacting how the real person thinks and perceives things. But how real is that danger? Will a person act on his immoral tendencies because of what he sees on TV? Will the average guy go out and kill “bad” people because of watching Dexter? Will the clean guy try and get some Vicodin because House does?

Maybe. Maybe not. One thing I can say – these shows are darned good but I am not about to go out and kill all the scum I see on the streets every day.

Grey’s Anatomy doc discharged

Grey’s Anatomy star Brooke Smith, who plays the character of Dr. Eric Hahn has been let go from the hit show.

According to Shonda Rhimes, the decision to release Smith originated from the network and not from herself. ABC execs apparently had problems with Hahn’s sizzling relationship with Callie Torres (played by Sara Ramirez).

The Cleaner gets second season

Benjamin Bratt’s top rating drama The Cleaner has been picked up for a second season.

The A&E Network has renewed the series that tells the story of William Banks who, with his unconventional team, tries to save people from their addictions whatever it takes.

The thirteen episodes that will comprise the second season will premiere next year.

Gary Cole now on Entourage

Gary Cole, who incidentally is one of my favorite actors, has been signed on to become the latest addition to Entourage.

Cole will be playing Ari Gold’s oldest friend. Cole’s character will be introduced to viewers through a three-episode arc that will air this November.

Can’t wait!
