Watch Conan arrive at TBS

Never before have I seen throngs of employees gathered to worship the man who is giving every one of them job security. Yes, Conan O’Brien has finally arrived at the TBS offices after his nationwide concert tour, to set to work on his new talk show. I have no idea if he expected to see this kind of crowd waiting for him at the TBS home offices in Atlanta or not, but it’s nice that he took the time to address the people gathered there.

As they scream and cheer when he exits his vehicle, the phrase “lord and savior” keeps coming to mind…

Conan has a new show – on TBS

Conan O’Brien has found his new network home, and it’s the last place anyone expected: TBS. Debuting in November, Conan’s new hour-long show will air at 11:pm Monday through Thursday, and will be followed by George Lopez’ talk/comedy hour.

Since NBC asked O’Brien to step down from The Tonight Show so Jay Leno could return, the smart money has been on Fox becoming the comic’s new home. But complications arose during negotiations with Fox, which allowed TBS to swoop in at the last minute with an offer Conan found too good to refuse: create and own your show. TBS has reportedly given Conan a blank check (metaphorically) to do basically anything he wants, on the show.

While some may wonder why O’Brien would go with a cable network that’s not known for its original shows, instead of a higher-profile gig like Fox, there is some strong logic to his decision. Fox would have put more pressure on O’Brien to deliver big ratings, while TBS can be more than satisfied with the numbers his established audience will bring. Essentially, Conan will be a very big fish in a very small pond — while working one less night a week (Friday nights are devoted to movies at TBS). And TBS will gain some much-needed cred among younger, hipper viewers.

It’s win-win.

George Lopez, whose show will be bumped from its current 11:pm time slot to midnight, was apparently instrumental in convincing O’Brien to sign on with TBS, calling O’Brien personally to ask that he consider joining the network’s line-up.

Conan offered put his signature spin on the situation by saying, “In three months I’ve gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I’m headed to basic cable.  My plan is working perfectly.”

There’s no word yet on whether O’Brien will bring along his entire team to the new show, or his frequent collaborator Andy Richter.

Oprah announces her Next Chapter

To the surprise of no one at all, Oprah Winfrey isn’t leaving television when her daily talk show ends next year.

Instead, she’ll be redirecting her efforts 100% towards her new cable channel, the Oprah Winfrey Network, where she’ll produce and appear on a number of original shows. She’ll be hosting her own new OWN show, entitled Oprah’s Next Chapter, which finds her traveling around the world to faraway places like Egypt and China to have “more riveting conversations with the people we all want to hear from.” Next Chapter is expected to be an hour-long show, airing 2 or 3 times a week in prime time.

Oprah will also be a part of Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star, where she’ll serve as a judge on an American Idol-type search for the next great talk show host.

The rest of OWN’s roster is made up of shows seemingly tailored around Oprah’s personal friends and the top names on her rolodex, such as Gail King, Lisa Ling, Shania Twain, and more.

Anybody else remember that interview she did with Jay Leno after all the Leno/Conan hubbub, where he was certain she would keep doing a show of some kind, even after The Oprah Winfrey Show ends, and she swore up and down that she wasn’t doing another talk show? I’m not a big Leno fan, but it looks like he was spot-on about Oprah.

Leno’s Star-Studded Return on the Tonight Show

Jay Leno will be returning to the Tonight Show slot next week. Come Monday the verdict on how people will react to the “re-toss up” of NBC’s late night lineup will known.

Leno is obviously trying to stack things up in his favor by getting big stars with lots of drawing power as guests for the entire month of March. On March 1 fisrt up will be Jamie Foxx, Lindsey Vonn (Winter Olympics gold medal skier)and Brad Paisley. The rest of the month will feature equally big (if not bigger) stars or at least equally controversial ones like Morgan Freeman, Meredith Viera, Kristen Stewart, Simon Cowell, Kim Kardashian, Colbie Caillat,Sarah Palin (March 2), and the cast of Jersey Shore (March 3).

Leno is obviously nervous about what will happen especially with the uproar Conan fans made after Leno’s decision to agree to go back. As he said to Oprah the decision was “agonizing” but “Who wouldn’t do that [host the Tonight Show]“? Let’s wait and see if the people will greet him warmly or if he does indeed just have”rose-color glasses” and if things will “fall apart” despite his star-studded gues list.

Let’s hope things work out for him or NBC will once again be faced with the humiliating job of scrambling around trying to fix their botched up lineup.

Leno to Go Back to Late Night?

jay-leno-and-conan-obrienWait and see. That’s all we can do till Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and NBC comes up with a compromise that will make them happy (or at least less unhappy).

Just a few months back I was one of the eager well wishers for Jay Leno’s move to primetime. I guess all that good luck and positive energy just didn’t work. Viewership for the Jay Leno Show did not go up (compared to his viewership for the last season of the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno”) and ended up disgruntling NBC’s affiliates, whose local late newscasts’ viewership depend a lot on the previous show. Compared to the viewership of the top show in the 10pm time slot, Jay Leno’s 5.8 million viewers is definitely a far cry from CBS’s “The Mentalist” viewers of 17.5 million. Guess how many people bother to change channels just to watch late news? Definitely not that much.

Because of this, even though talk shows are far cheaper to produce, it is obvious that NBC’s revenues are taking a big hit from the “mistake” of moving Leno from late night to primetime. Their problem now is how do they move Leno back to late night? What will they do with Conan (put him back to 12mn?) and what will they show for the 10pm slot?

According to Jay Leno, “NBC is working on a solution.” What that is, as I said, we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, Conan promises that “We’ve got a great show for you tonight. I have no idea what time it will air — but it’s going to be a great show.”

Tyra Show Going Off Air

tyra-banksGood news! Good news! Tyra Banks has announced that the Tyra Show will retire after its fifth season.

The show has been getting a pretty good viewership and even won Daytime Emmy Awards twice (2008 and 2009) for being the outstanding talkshow (informative) category. As Tyra said, “Most times, a show leaves the air because not many people are watching. Well, you all are watching, in record numbers.” However, she will be focusing on other projects at her company Bankable Studios and says that the company will be making movies.

Honestly I don’t really care why Tyra will be going off air because though I do find myself riveted to the weirdly fascinating “informative” episodes of the Tyra Show I get too irritated by Tyra’s “know-it-all” attitude most of the time to get through an entire episode. Give me Chelsea Handler anytime of the day!

As for Tyra’s other shows she says that she will be continuing with “America’s Next Top Model” as well as “True Beauty.”

As for her goal to empower girls (I do root for her goal, I just wish she won’t be so irritating in the process…) she says that her “next huge steps will allow me [her] to reach more women and young girls to help us all feel as fierce as we truly are.”

Oprah to Say Bye in 2011: What will happen to daytime TV?

oprah winfreyOprah isn’t set to say goodbye till September of next year but everyone’s already wondering who will inherit her throne in daytime TV. Maybe Geraldo’s time has finally come (*snort*)!

Seriously though, Scott Collins of LA Times says that the most likely contenders for the slot will be “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “The Dr. Oz Show”. Of course, Dr. Phil might get it considering his on #2 spot in terms of viewership and like Oprah “made” him. Dr. Oz though is also doing really great considering that the show is but a year old, and like Dr. Phil, Oprah also made it. However, if Ellen decides to launch a campaign, like she did with the George Clooney where his poor staff got continuously harassed till he appeared on the “Ellen” or like when she wanted to be on the cover of “O Magazine”, maybe the TV execs will get pestered enough to cave in and give it to her.

Whatever happens though the question is likely moot because daytime TV hasn’t been the same for a long time and with Oprah gone, probably never will. As Steve Farella of TargetCast, an ad-firm, said, “Daytime TV as supplied by the networks is really all but dead. [But] It’s not because the talent isn’t there. It’s because the business isn’t there anymore.”

As for me I truthfully don’t care much who takes the slot because I can just watch reruns of Oprah on the Sezmi (Hopefully the service will be good and they’ll be everywhere by 2011!).

Capt Sully on The Daily Show

capt-sully-highest-duty-bookI just saw rerun of “The Daily Show” and, like many people, still can’t help but smile and feel a tad bit better when I saw that Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger being interviewed. He was on the show to promote his new book “Highest Duty”, but the Daily Show being what it is; I quickly lost sight of that intent and was just plain entertained with Jon Stewart’s antics and Captain Sully replies. Of course Captain Sully was still very much together the whole time but he sure smiled a lot and didn’t appear to somber like he does in most interviews. I guess that’s what happens when you get silly questions.

Some of the stuff that drew laughs included Jon Stewart’s impersonation of Cap’t Sully’s really really calm response to the emergency, his question on whether Cap’t Sully was distracted by the fact that the Daily Show studio was just a few block away (to which the Cap’t smiled and said no), and Cap’t Sully’s recommendation to the aviation industry to put back the tabs in their emergency handbook and cut costs elsewhere.

One thing’s for sure though Cap’t Sully was right in saying that people continue to look up to him because they want to hear good news and feel that good can happen. What he didn’t say though is that people look up to him and his crew because even after the crash and all the hoopla that went on with it his character shined. People see in him not just the good that can happen but a good man that makes good things happen.

Jay Leno Bids Farewell to the Tonight Show

jay-lenoIt was Jay Leno’s last night at the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and for the first time he nearly brought me to tears. His last night wasn’t really spent trying to put together tear jerking moments but despite the jokes Jay trying to keep his composure made me sentimental. Unfortunately I got to the tv to late to watch the start of the show and only saw the last half of his interview with Conan, who will be taking over the Tonight Show come Monday.

Jay Leno was gracious through out the interview and even told Conan that he was glad that Conan would be taking the reigns and that Conan was his only choice. Jay Leno has mentioned in the past months that he wants the transition to be as smooth as possible for Conan and he was obviously letting Conan do the talking during the interview, giving the audience a preview of what’s to come. They even showed a short clip of Conan going undercover doing a focus group to help him determine what best to do for the Tonight Show’s audience. Conan is expected to tone down his act a little bit to fit the more conservative Tonight Show audience but he is determined to do it without losing his own flair by making small changes. According to Conan,”Television’s changing drastically, and I want to make sure that my show isn’t too buttoned up, that I don’t have this feeling of, well, it’s the Tonight Show and so I’m going to completely change everything about myself. I’ll make small changes day-in and day-out, tiny little adjustments that I feel are appropriate.”

As for Jay Leno his final goodbye ended with him showing the real legacy of the Tonight Show – the children of all the Tonight Show staff that were born during the 17 years. His legacy is 68 in all. All I can say is good job to the Jay Leno and the Tonight Show staff. Thanks for all the laughs and we’re looking forward to September.

No Jay Leno Tonight

jay_lenoJay Leno was checked in a hospital earlier today after feeling unwell. So far there has been no word as to his exact illness but according to his rep he is doing fine. Because of the hospitalization reruns will be shown for Thursday and Friday shows. Jay Leno isn’t expected to be back until Monday for the live tapings of the show. Jay Leno is known for his very strong work ethics and doesn’t miss work often so he must be feeling really bad to have checked himself in.

With just about a month more to go on The Tonight Show Jay Leno before Conan O’Brien steps in we sure hope Jay starts feeling better soon. No point in missing seeing him live on the show sooner than we have too. Jay Leno is turning 59 on Tuesday (He shares his birthday with Jessica Alba, who he recently had on the show) so we all want to see him have the grandest birthday celebration on the Tonight Show, after all that’ll be his last birthday as its host.

The people bumped for Thursday’s show due to the hospitalization included Ryan Reynolds, animal trainer Jules Sylvester, and the swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

Hope you’re feeling better Jay!
